Frieze New York 2022
Tania Candiani’s work has been developed in diverse media and practices that maintain an interest in the complex intersection between language, phonic, graphic, linguistic, symbolic and technological systems. She has worked with different associative narratives, taking as a starting point a proposal to invent, reorder, remix and play with the correspondences between technologies, knowledge and thought, using the idea of organization and reorganization of discourse, as a structure for creativity and critical thinking. The works we present revolve around ideas such as performance, struggles and rituals. The video Ritual, Sanes de la Curación, El Sonido del Fuego, a piece of 10 trumpets made of colored glass blown by traditional artisans, and the series of paintings Vuelta Negrito and De Cabeza Negrito are inspired by the annotations for traditional choreographies elaborated exclusively for this presentation.
On the other hand, Manifestantes, one of the artist’s most recent series of works, seeks to make clear through embroidery, textiles and stitching, the constant feminist struggles, the social structures that remain hidden in the cultural fabrics and the spheres of science and technology. This project aims to create new narratives that unveil other ways to understand the traditions, struggles and cultural products that emerged from the union between oppressed populations during the colony. Starting from a particular interest in the history of science related to ancestral knowledge, Tania Candiani proposes an exhibition in which indigenous, African and European knowledge are articulated to translate them in a more optimistic vision of the present , while interweaving evidence of the social structures of today’s world.
