Light Field

Light Field marks the first presentation at Instituto de Visión NY by Brazilian artist Marlon de Azambuja, who lives and works in Paris. His practice is deeply rooted in installation as a space for inquiry, with a sustained engagement with architecture—particularly the formal and utopian principles of modernism—that has informed his thinking about space, perception, and the conditions through which an artwork is encountered.

The presentation brings together works from different moments of Azambuja’s practice alongside new works conceived specifically for this occasion. Collectively, they establish a field of action and reflection in which the architecture of the gallery becomes both material and subject. Its dimensions, tensions, thresholds, and trajectories are activated through relatively simple interventions that alter the viewer’s perception of what is already there. In this sense, Azambuja’s approach resonates with the legacy of North American Land Art, in which artists transformed sites into perceptual and conceptual territories, generating new geographies through the relationship between intervention, landscape, and the body.

Azambuja’s interventions operate through a tension between material presence and perceptual absence. Lines, burns, surfaces, and sources of light become instruments for registering forces that cannot be seen directly but nevertheless organize our experience of the gallery. Ultimately, the gallery becomes a field of relations—between architecture and body, reason and instinct, matter and memory, visibility and imagination—where the invisible is not opposed to the visible but becomes one of the conditions through which it can be perceived.
