Sandra Monterroso
Sandra Monterroso is a contemporary artist of Mayan Q’eqchi’ descent. Her artistic practice revolves around restoring her ancestral cultural heritage as a Mayan artist. From a decolonial perspective, her work addresses cultural, economic, political, and territorial dispossession issues suffered by Indigenous peoples. She works with sculpture, video, performance, and textiles using natural pigments such as indigofera, cochineal, turmeric, fustic, chlorophyll, avocado, flowers, and more. In her stylistic approach, she incorporates Mayan spirituality, textiles, and organic materials to create works of art whose signs and levels of meaning invite us to heal colonial wounds and preserve Indigenous knowledge.
