The central interest of Lina Mazenett and David Quiroga is the temporality of matter. They work with materials of fossil origin such as tar, pitch, coal and a variety of minerals. These materials not only have a particular symbology, but also have a great condensed energy that has accumulated over time. Very present in our daily life, a relationship is proposed that links human beings with remote geological times.
Karlo Andrei Ibarra’s proposal addresses Puerto Rico’s subservient position as an unincorporated territory of the United States, he directly and aesthetically examines the implications of this association: “For more than 15 years I have worked with the concept of “reparation” in my practice. It allows me to investigate the dialect between destruction and repair, in which repair is understood as a form of cultural resistance as well as a means for a society or a subject to reappropriate their history and identity.”
Nohemí Pérez’s work revolves around the relationship between man and nature; the conflicts, tensions and genesis that arise from this constant friction. From the notions of architecture, cinema and sociology, the artist proposes a reconstruction of the story of her origin and thus, collects the voices of those who live and have lived in Catatumbo from the close emotional ties of her experience.
Gloria Sebastián Fierro’s most recent paintings are influenced by contemporary understanding of space and time. Fierro believes that space/time behaves the same in the universe as it does in painting, and therefore she is constantly eager to explore and understand our place in the universe.
Felipe Arturo’s works are mainly sculptures, installations and videos that take elements of architecture, urbanism and art in relation to history, geography or the economy. His projects are based on concepts such as structure, sequence and matter. His work is strongly influenced by vernacular architecture and construction techniques that reflect processes of assimilation and resistance to colonial and post-colonial processes.
Otto Berchem’s work explores social and visual codes, focusing his interest on the relationships of language, architecture, history, and poetry. His conceptual practice employs a wide variety of media, including painting, video, public interventions, and other unconventional arts.
