ARCO 2015
For Arco/Colombia 2015, Instituto de Vision is pleased to present the works of Carolina Caycedo and Carlos Motta two Colombian artists whose pieces reflect upon their country recent history and its complex geopolitical tensions.
Yuma, or the land of Friends (2014) by Carolina Caycedo is part of Be Dammed. A research-based project that explores the concepts of flow and containment, especially interrelated with the construction and planning of large dams or water reservoirs, and the mechanisms of social control. Caycedo focuses on the case studies of hydroelectric dams currently under construction at El Quimbo and Hidroituango in Colombia.
The continuous documentation in time of these great constructions, allows to visualize the effects of mega-infrastructures through the natural and social landscapes; on the local and global scale. Most of the electricity produced will be exported. The molding of nature is the molding of society.
Six Acts: An Experiment in Narrative Justice by Carlos Motta took place during the 2010 presidential elections in Colombia. The project is made up of a series of performative actions in public squares in Bogotá.
Six actors from different social classes and ethnic origins recite six speeches by left-liberal leaders Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, Luis Carlos Galán, Bernardo Jaramillo Ossa, Jaime Pardo Leal, Carlos Pizarro and Rafael Uribe Uribe; all murdered in the last hundred years for their political ideology. These “acts” focus on the need to remember the systematic elimination of the voices that dared to oppose power, stating their points of view and denouncing the people responsible for the repetitive and endless history of corruption and violence in Colombia.
